look if you hadn't been there it would have been the whole group of them against me so y'know thankful. sarah healed me so i'm not really hurting much anymore. some soreness but... yeah. still pissed at that asshole.
[ rafe doesn't tend to hate, truly hate, a lot of things, but the power and arrogance that comes with some angels is definitely one of them. ] what do you think sonny said to him? [ whatever he said or did, it must've done the trick. the guy hasn't bothered any of them, as far as rafe knows. ]
typical old, powerful angel who thinks he can step on everyone else. thinks he is entitled to whatever the hell he wants and hurting others without thought.
[and it is goddamn bullshit really. he hates it.] i don't know. i don't know anyone more intimidating than sonny. that guy might talk a lot of talk. might have a lot of words and power behind shit, but. i don't know. sonny would scare the shit out of me. and he's got the crowbar behind him. most people know better.
[ chicago is one of the few places where angels can't just come in and impose themselves, and that goes beyond the treaty that was signed years ago. demons - people - like sonny and the crowbar, they've got roots in the city and most people do know better. this guy just rubs rafe the wrong way in every way, so he worries about his friends. ]
i'm hoping that's the last we hear of him. but let me know if it's not.
i don't know. i think we're gonna try to take him down. i want to.
[it's just a matter of figuring out how which is a lot more difficult. there is plenty of wanting to slowly destroy this guy, take away what he cares about most like his money, his businesses but-
it's not like it's something they've ever tried before. he realizes it is not going to be easy but they take away his power? they'd have nothing to worry about ever again.]
[noah smiles softly at rafe's response which comes so quickly. he knew he would say that, and while he knows that rafe has made up his mind, he wouldn't be his best friend if he didn't ask:]
[ noah's the one who already got into a very visible fight with the cromwell, specifically. he'd already have a target on his back, whatever sonny did to keep the peace. rafe wouldn't be his best friend if he didn't point this out, too. ]
[ so. this is a unique situation rafe finds himself in.
he likes kasey. he likes kasey a lot. honestly, what is there not to like? she's gorgeous and smart and warm. it stands to reason other people would see what he does. he doesn't like using the word rival to describe any of them, as that kind of makes it seem like he's fighting with someone over something and kasey is most definitely not a something. she is a person. a beautiful person who happens to have abilities unlike anyone else he's met. a person who is best friends with a ghost.
a ghost who is in love with her. and from what he has been able to gauge, kasey's heart is tangled in this person, too.
which. okay. it sucks but he can deal. she's free to like whoever she likes. liking someone doesn't mean they're obligated to like you back. still, they've been spending more time together. rafe's a dumbass who promised he'd help her investigate sean's death, along with learning more about him in general. he doesn't think either one of them actually want him to cross over, but they need to get to the bottom of things anyhow. sean's murderer is out there, and they deserve to be brought to justice.
rafe's not an asshole. he sees the importance in this.
which is why he eventually stumbles on a clue, and this clue has them driving out to a town six hours away. he'll stop at a diner midway so they can stretch their legs and get some dinner. the diner is - something, and the town is in the middle of nowhere. ] I feel like I'm stepping into a Tarantino film.
[kasey is used to connecting to the dead, to ghosts really. she's had more friends who were ghosts than who were living, which is really creepy to tell anyone about but it's been a part of her life before he knew what ghosts were. so her heart got all tangled with someone who is already dead, who is her best friend.
the thing she is not used to? connecting to people who are alive, breathing. sarah was her only friend before she met rafe, she's her other best friend.
so all of this with rafe, it's new, and she doesn't really know what to do about it but his help has meant so much to her. she knows she doesn't want sean to go, no, but she also knows this living in-between is no living at all. she knows what she is meant to do, she knows what is supposed to happen, and sean deserves peace, which starts at solving the mystery of his murder.
kasey bites down on her lip with a small laugh as they step into the diner.] If blood starts to splatter on the walls and people start saying Fuck a lot, you'll know we've stepped into that one.
[she grimaces at herself (fail much at social interaction here, kasey?!)] That was dark.
[ rafe doesn't think it's creepy. okay, so there are some things about ghosts and the paranormal that he'll find a little creepy, but he doesn't think her connection to the spirit world is one of those things. if anything, it's helped him understand more in a way he wouldn't have otherwise.
sometimes he wonders if she'd be able to see his dad. if he'd want her to, selfishly, or would rather he be at peace.
he doesn't entertain the thoughts often.
rafe opens the door for them, smirking lightly at her as she steps on through. he'll keep a vigilant eye on their surroundings, since he wouldn't want to inadvertently bring them somewhere that could bring blood, but he thinks they'll be good. ] You've seen that one, huh?
[ he finds an unoccupied booth and slides into it. ] And hey, I was the one who mentioned Tarantino in the first place. The guy lives for dark. [ there's only so many ways the conversation could've gone, and he thinks it's cute she worries about it anyway. ]
[there are some parts of it kasey still finds creepy even after doing this for so long, but the spirits themselves are usually not. they're lost. they've died, and she knows what that is like even if she came back.
if his dad is out there, she'd want to see him. most people die and they don't linger too long in the in-between but if they have something to share, have something they're holding on to- it's different.
kasey smirks back at him, following him into the diner. she thinks they'll be okay too even if... there are definitely some creepy vibes here. one of the lights are flickering but she doesn't feel any ghostly presence here.] Yeah. I've seen them all. Probably when I was too young too.
[she slides into her booth across from him, lifting up the menu with a tiny smirk before she bites down on her lip a bit] It does seem to be a passion of his, and I... get how you got those vibes from this place. A little eerie, huh?
Just a little. If you want to get out of here just say the word.
[ he'd never want her to feel uncomfortable, and there's gotta be somewhere else they can stop for good eventually. it's the first diner-like place he's seen in over a couple of hours, and he's wondering what kind of life sean led before he found kasey. it's the first time he's starting to really think of sean as sean.
someone with a past and a family and a life. it's weird, but maybe he kind of needs it to be weird.
propping his elbows against the table, he leans forward slightly with that ever present smirk that tugs into a smile. ] Maybe they're just getting into the Halloween spirit.
That philly steak, though? [ he's pointing to the tray a server is carrying as he walks past them. ] Looks amazing.
I think I'm good and also really hungry, but thank you for the offer. Kinda used to eerie.
[and also creepy. neither really make her uncomfortable unless they're pumped up a few notches. she picks up the menu, scanning through it a little.
it does weigh on her to think about what sean might have gone through before, what his last moments were like. he could only remember bits and pieces. sometimes that happens especially when a death is really traumatic. and murder would... do that.
kasey laughs, glancing up at him] Maybe. We should give them a trophy. In the middle of nowhere. Flickering lights. Nearly empty. Tarantino-like vibe. A+.
[she glances at the philly steak as it walks past them.] ...It really does though. I'm too hungry to be creeped out.
[ it's not that he forgets about it, it's just that it's hardly the only thing about kasey that makes her kasey - even if it's obviously had a profound effect on her life. but it's a comforting reminder, nonetheless. if anything was off, she'd be able to sense it. and rafe has enough street smarts and intuition he'd pick up on a few things himself.
for now, it just looks like a diner that's mostly been left forgotten and without much care.
he laughs quietly at her agreement, handing her one of the menus. he lingers a bit on her, before he forces himself to actually look at the specials. their reasons for sleuthing are not ... happy ones, but he's happy to be here with her nonetheless. and shh, an opportunity to learn more about her. ]
I didn't know you were a fan. Are you into gory movies and stuff?
[kasey smiles softly at his simple response like it's something that he can not think about so easily. she doesn't really blame people when that's all their able to see. ...not that many people know about it.
she looks over at him when he laughs. he has a very nice laugh, and then her gaze drifts down to the menu in front of her slowly, taking in a breath and then releasing it again. she smirks at the question]
Completely. I love all kinds of scary movies including the really cheesy ones that look totally fake.
[ he grins easily, ducking his head some to ~look~ at the menu even if everyone knows he is totally ordering that philly cheese steak. something he and noah have in common is most definitely their appetite, particularly their appreciation for good meat. ]
I'm kinda the same way. I actually like them even better the faker they look.
[ and he sorta loves that she's the same. ] Give me a horrible B movie and I'm good to go. We sometimes marathon them toward the end of the month. [ 'cause halloween. ] You should join us this year.
[ sry to inform you kasey you most definitely have living friends now. ]
he and noah both have some of the most impressive appetites you've ever seen. interrupting him while he's having breakfast, lunch, dinner or in-between meals is a surefire way of getting on his bad side. at least temporarily. no one really gets on his bad side for good. he's rafe. he's sort of a golden retriever. but most of his moods can almost always tie back to him being hungry. once he gets food into his system, that mood vastly improves.
that said, he can't really get mad when it involves work and one of his coworkers got so sick that he had to take up their shift at the last minute. he alerts hana he'll be getting home late tonight. they both moved out of the temple a while back and are living together for the first time.
it's about as cute as you can imagine.
what's not cute? is having to leave a delicious burger behind when you've only given it one bite.
it's why he's coming home to hana with the most adorable grumpiest face known to man. she knows him so well that she can probably identify his 'i'm hungry' face. ]
[She knows that grumpy face very well at this point which is why he gets a soft, sympathetic, but clearly charmed look as she does. She knows Rafe's relationship with food is very important to him and she never stands in his way when there's food involved. As he comes in the door, she makes her way closer, and drapes her arm around his neck.]
Doesn't he always? [ there's a small smirk, some of that grumpiness dissipating in the face of ... well, hana. an arm easily reaches for her, wrapping securely around her waist. the fact he isn't as grumpy anymore doesn't mean he won't be slightly dramatic about it, lower lip pushing down into something resembling a pout. ]
